Ford Electrifies USPS Fleet

The USPS vehicle fleet is the largest federal fleet in the entire country, and it is starting to go electric. Ford has been awarded the contract to help USPS make the transition, supplying 9,250 left-hand drive battery-electric vehicles. Delivery of these 100% electric vehicles is expected to take place in December of this year.

USPS announced the green modernization initiative that led to this contract in December of last year, in keeping with commitments to lower both carbon emissions and costs of the postal service. The plan projects that a fleet consisting of 75% electric vehicles will be in use within the next five years, and after 2026, all acquisitions of of Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV) will be 100% electric. The total investment in vehicles is expected to reach $9.6 billion, including $3 billion consisting of funds from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

“We are moving forward with our plans to simultaneously improve our service, reduce our cost, grow our revenue, and improve the working environment for our employees. Electrification of our vehicle fleet is now an important component of these initiatives,” said Louis DeJoy, Postmaster General. “We have developed a strategy that mitigates both cost and risk of deployment – which enable execution on this initiative to begin now. I again want to thank the Administration officials and members of Congress who have assisted us in this initiative. Each has shown genuine understanding that our movement toward electrification must be thoughtful and deliberate, must appropriately manage risk, and must be consistent with our primary delivery mission for the American people.”

Ford E-Transit vehicles ended up being the option chosen by the Postal Service after a stiff competition for the contract. Manufactured in Kansas City, Missouri, these vehicles will be charged in over 14,000 new charging stations that the Postal Service has issued contracts to three different suppliers for. As these vehicles begin making regular deliveries, they will reflect the commitment to sustainability and quality not only of the United States Postal Service, but of Ford as well.
