F-150 Lightning Earns MotorTrend Truck of the Year Award

The Ford F-150 Lightning has been breaking through boundaries and earning rewards rapidly since its introduction in May, including the TIME Top 200 Invention of 2022 award, the 2023 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award, the CarBuzz Save the Planet award, and many more. Recently, another prestigious award was added to the F-150 Lightning trophy case– 2023 MotorTrend Truck of the Year.

This win is remarkable for a number of reasons. Firstly, the F-150 Lightning earned this spot by a unanimous vote, becoming the first electric truck to ever do so. This is also only the second time ever that any electric vehicle has won via a unanimous vote from all of the judges.

“It’s really brilliant for the team that Lightning is the first EV truck to win by unanimous vote,” said Darren Palmer, vice president, electric vehicle programs. “This truck is full of firsts, and this one is really special to add to Lightning’s historic launch.”

Trucks that are up for MotorTrend Truck of the Year go through rigorous testing. The phases include testing for acceleration, figure-8 handling, and 60-0 braking performance. There are also additional tests for each class of truck that a vehicle must pass, such as braking and acceleration while towing a trailer that has been loaded near the vehicle’s rated towing capacity, and while hauling a load near to the vehicle’s payload capacity. An especially challenging “frustration test” involves trucks reaching highway acceleration while going uphill with a trailer. The judges are also allowed to come up with their own subjective off-road tests on a variety of road types and surfaces.

As of this November, the F-150 Lightning is America’s best-selling electric truck, with over 2,000 sold this month and almost 13,300 F-150 Lightnings sold total. The F-150 Lightning has been a driving force in helping Ford become the No. 2 EV brand in the country. Ford is ramping up production to produce more of these powerful trucks. The goal is to produce 150,000 F-150 Lightning trucks every year by the end of 2023.
